Attractions and Activities
The estuary is just metres away across a gravel road and attracts outdoor enthusiasts, a popular lagoon swimming area is a 300 metre walk from the house. The Island is a quiet residential area where birds and tortoises are often found in the gardens and natural areas and it is also ideal for walking or cycling and is largely flat. The Village supports a very active cycling walking and running fraternity.
The estuary supports a varied ecosystem of sea water fish, seahorses, sand mussels, sand prawns and water birds. It provides residents and guests with safe swimming, exciting fishing, canoeing, windsurfing and glorious sunsets. A slipway is located nearby for boat launching, there is a water skiing zone downstream near the river mouth or a larger and deeper zone across the N2 in Swartvlei itself. Canoes and paddle-skis can be launched at several points along the lagoon. Fishing (with permit) happens all along the lagoon and into Swartvlei.
The river mouth and three stunning unspoilt and undeveloped beaches Myoli, Sedgefield and Swartvlei are literally minutes away by car. Buffalo Bay beach, which is widely regarded as one of the best swimming beaches in the country is 15 minutes away.
Sedgefield is the hidden jewel of the Garden Route and The Island is a registered Cape Nature Conservancy, home to breeding reptile populations and a wide variety of birds.
